How to download older Mac OS X versions via the App Store If you once had purchased an old version of Mac OS X from the App Store, open it and go to the Purchased tab. There you’ll find all the installers you can download. It’s obviously convenient to have a conversion option sitting on all Macs, but QuickTime Player does have a few downsides. Mostly, it’s that QuickTime has limited codec support, and while you can choose different resolutions (480p, 720p, 1080p) and file formats (different iOS devices, Mac, or generic PC), don’t expect to open a WMV file or any obscure video formats with it.

I have a WMV (Windows Media) video file. But of course I don't have Windows Media Player on my Mac. Can I play this video with QuickTime on the Mac, or convert it to MPEG format? |
Playing Windows Media Files on QuickTime
Yes, you can play a WMV file on your Mac. With the recent release of Windows Media Components for QuickTime, you can play Windows Media audio and video files (WMA, WMV) directly in the QuickTime Player and also view Windows Media content on the Internet using a Web browser.
Flip4Mac WMV is comprised of a collection of QuickTime™ components that enables Mac OS X users to play, import and export Windows Media files using QuickTime-based applications. Both the PowerPC and Intel-based Macintosh systems are supported, on Mac OS X version 10.3.9 and QuickTime version 6.5 or later.
You can download Flip4Mac WMV free of charge, and if you purchase an upgrade, you can import Windows Media files for editing, create Windows Media files for distribution, and export to other formats. Note that this product does not support files that are protected with Windows Media digital rights management (DRM).
Windows Media Player for Mac?
Another option is to download the Windows Media Player for Mac from the Microsoft website.
Microsoft says they will continue to offer Windows Media Player version 9 as a free download for Macintosh users, but they will no longer provide support or updates for this product. So in the long run, you may be better off going with the Flip4Mac WMV addon for QuickTime.

Posted by: Greg 22 Mar 2009 | I have found that some WMV files are ok with Flip4Mac but there are some which when you play them, give you audio but no video. I have tried with Windows Media Player for Mac too but it seems there is a codec that isn't supported by either platform. Another forum I read said this is the Windows Media Video Image codec. Does anyone out there have a solution for playing these particular files on a Mac? I managed to get them playing on WMP on a PC fine after installing the G2M3 codec, which makes sense as the files we are playing are from a webinar, and that is what GoToMeeting specialises in, but still no joy with the Mac. Any help you can give would be appreciated. |
